Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
The question always brings me back to a quiet office, sitting across from a manager, filling out an annual review. Thinking about targets, planning the next steps, choosing the right training to “get there.”
I’ve always been a little impressed by people who can answer it without hesitation. Those who know exactly where they want to be in five or ten years. There is something strong and reassuring in that kind of clarity.
For me, it has never been that precise.
Sometimes I don’t even know what I’ll cook for dinner tonight, or where we’ll go this summer. So imagining a fixed point ten years from now feels… distant. Not impossible, just not how my mind works.
I do have preferences. Directions I’m drawn to. Things I quietly work on, step by step. But I’ve learned that life doesn’t always follow the lines we try to draw for it.
So if I have to answer, I would say this:
In ten years, I’ll be where life has led me.
Not by accident, but not entirely by control either. Somewhere shaped by my choices, yes, but also by timing, by people, by moments I couldn’t have planned.
And maybe that’s enough.
Because more than arriving at a specific place, what matters to me is how I walk through the years that bring me there.
