A change that changed everything

Describe one positive change you have made in your life.

If I have to choose one positive change that truly shaped my life, it would be this : I learned to change the way I see people.

It sounds simple. But for me, it changed everything.

I used to be a little afraid of my eldest sister. Not in a dramatic way… just enough to keep my distance.

She was responsible, disciplined, the kind of person who always did what needed to be done. And me, I was more easygoing, more social, not always carrying my share of responsibility in the same way.

We didn’t argue. We just didn’t get close.

I remember how sensitive I was around her.

If we were doing something together and she sighed, even quietly, I would immediately feel like I had done something wrong. Sometimes, I would hold back tears without really understanding why.

So over time, I avoided her. Not intentionally, just… naturally.

And that feeling stayed with me for years.

Even after I got married and moved to France, I still felt uncomfortable calling her.

Even when I went back to Bangkok with my children, I didn’t feel fully at ease staying in her house, though it was a home she had bought for the whole family.

Then one day, during a conversation with my younger sister, something shifted.

She told me that what we see in others is not always the truth.

That we interpret their reactions through our own experiences and emotions.

“If she sighs,” she said, “it doesn’t mean it’s about you.”

It was a small sentence. But it changed the way I saw everything.

For the first time, I realized that I had been living with my own interpretation, not necessarily her reality. Maybe she was just tired. Maybe she was thinking about something else.

Maybe… it had never been about me.

I didn’t need to change her. I just needed to adjust my perception.

And from there, things became lighter.

Today, we can talk about anything. There is no fear, no tension.

We don’t always agree, but we understand each other better. And more importantly, I feel free to be myself around her.

It may seem like a small internal change, but it had a deep impact on my life.

Because sometimes, it’s not the relationship that needs to change, it’s the way we choose to see it.
