ON : Best or Worst or just…

What animals make the best/worst pets?

I wouldn’t consider myself an expert on this question. We haven’t had much experience with pets, at least not in the sense of animals we keep close as part of the family.

But from what I’ve observed, what makes a pet “good” or “bad” often comes less from the animal itself and more from the human side.

Animals do have their natural instincts. Yet, once they become pets, they live within a human environment. They rely on us for food, care, and structure. In that sense, their behavior is shaped, at least partly, by how we guide them.

When we call a pet “good” or “bad,” we are often judging it based on our own expectations. A dog that comes when called is seen as a good dog. But that same dog, chasing a neighbor’s cat, quickly becomes a bad one, from someone else’s point of view.

The same goes for a cat. If it helps catch a rat, it’s appreciated. But if it leaves a mess in your garden, it’s no longer welcome.

So perhaps the question is not only about the animal, but also about perspective and responsibility. We are quick to label animals as good or bad, but we rarely question the role of the owner in shaping that behavior.

In the end, a “good” or “bad” pet may simply reflect the environment it lives in, and the expectations placed upon it.
