I grew up in Thailand, surrounded by stories of our royal family — stories that felt both distant and close at the same time. Among them, Her Majesty the Queen Mother was someone I quietly admired. She wasn’t just a figure in a portrait; she was part of our nation’s heart.
I still remember seeing her beside the King, standing gracefully in the heat and dust of remote villages. No matter where they went, she was always smiling, calm, elegant, and radiant. I once heard a story from an interview where someone asked her why she always dressed so beautifully, even when visiting faraway places. Her answer touched me deeply. She said, “People make an effort to see us. Apart from our work, I show my respect to them by dressing nicely.”
That simple line stayed with me. It showed how deeply she understood the people how kindness and respect can be shown through the smallest gestures.
When I was younger, there were many rumours about the royal family. Back then, I didn’t know what to believe. But as I grew older, I began to see their work more clearly. The long journeys, the quiet dedication, and the way the Queen Mother always stood beside the King, through everything, I realised that sometimes, what we see from a distance doesn’t tell the full story.
Beyond her public duties, I also saw her as a mother. She raised four children while carrying the weight of a nation. Of course, there were caretakers, as in any royal household but from the photos and stories, we could see glimpses of a real family. Smiles, laughter, and togetherness. She was, in her own way, a working mom : balancing love, responsibility, and an extraordinary calling.
Now that she has left us, I feel a quiet sadness. But more than that, I feel gratitude. Gratitude for her grace, her strength, and the way she carried herself with kindness and dignity, even in the hardest moments.
To me, she will always be the Mother of the Nation — not only because of her title, but because of the love and care she showed for her people.
Rest peacefully, our beloved Queen Mother. You will always be remembered with love — from this Thai heart, across the sea.
With love and respect.
